Introduction In Switzerland, the organic sector has been trying to reduce the massive import of protein crops for feed by encouraging grain legume cultivation during the past years (Clerc et al, 2015). The main limiting factors of low yield stability and high weed pressure were successfully overcome through intercropping of peas and faba beans with barley and oats, respectively. Thus, the production of peas and faba beans grew continuously from 2010 to 2015 from 200t and 90t to 1170t and 560t, respectively (bioaktuell 2017). Danish farmers are required to grow around 300.000 hektares of catch crops each year, as part of the Danish regulations of N use and losses from agriculture. The rules set some minimum requirements about how to grow catch crops, but do not attempt to optimize the effects of the catch crops. In the paper it is discussed how farmers can improve the effects of catch crops, both the environmental effects and the effects on nitrogen supply for succeeding agricultural crops. It is shown that it is highly important which plant species are grown, as there are large differences in their root growth and winter hardines. It is also shown that the species choice may have suprising large effects on the N supply for the succeeding crop. |

Mit den Versuchen am Friedrich Löffler Institut (FLI) sollten quantifizierbare Unterschiede zwischen behandelten und unbehandelten Körnerleguminosen durch den Verdauungsversuch erarbeitet werden. Darüber hinaus wurde in einem Fütterungsversuch unter Institutsbedingungen der Einsatz von Wintererbsen, die unter den Bedingungen des ökologischen Landbaus erzeugt wurden, geprüft. Der Versuch wurde mit den gleichen Rationen und Tierzahlen in einem ökologischen Betrieb unter Praxisbedingungen wiederholt. This research review notes that cereal variety breeding in the last 50 years has been based on pedigree line bred varieties as part of the development of a production system dependent on oil-based inputs. The characteristics desirable for an organic system are frequently at odds with those designed for non-organic systems. The effects of nitrogen (N) availability related to fertilizer type, catch crop management, and rotation composition on cereal yield and grain N were investigated in four organic and one conventional cropping systems in Denmark using the FASSET model. The four-year rotation studied was: spring barley–(faba bean or grass-clover)– potato–winter wheat. Experiments were done at three locations representative of the different soil types and climatic conditions in Denmark. It appears that the growth of barley seedlings during spring is restricted by moderate internal deficiency of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in most cases. This agrees with the well-known increases of growth and grain yields if P and K fertilizer placement is used in spring barley growing. It is also evident from our earlier work that barley cultivars may differ in the P acquisition from soil (Gahoonia and Nielsen, 2004; Gahoonia and Nielsen, 2003). Das Vorhaben zielt auf die Erforschung und Weiterentwicklung von umweltgerechten Pflanzenschutzmaßnahmen. Neueste Erkenntnisse zeigen, dass von Rhizosphärenbakterien gebildete, sogenannte Quorum Sensing (QS) Moleküle, positive Wirkungen auf Ertrag und Gesundheitsstatus von Kulturpflanzen haben. Die Aktivierung und Stärkung des pflanzlichen Immunsystems ist eine vielversprechende Alternative im Pflanzenschutz. Das Konzept umfasst eine Sensibilisierung (priming) der Kulturpflanzen gegenüber Pathogenen, die einen hohen Ernteertrag auch unter Pathogendruck gewährleistet.
